Endometriosis

Naturopathic Endometriosis Treatment

Endometriosis is a painful disorder that is estimated to affect about one million women in the U.S. alone. It predominantly affects women in their reproductive years (ages 25-35). The disorder is a result of the tissue that lines your uterus (endometrium) growing into the ovaries, bowels or other pelvic organs where it is not meant to grow. Just like normal endometrium, the tissue outside of the uterus thickens, falls apart and bleeds with every menstrual cycle. Unlike in the uterus, however, the uprooted tissue has no way to exit the body. Over time this can lead to the inflammation of surrounding tissue and severe pain.

Some symptoms commonly associated with endometriosis include painful menstruation, pain during intercourse, pain when urinating, excessive bleeding, and in some cases it can even cause infertility. There are several different ways to treat endometriosis. Pain medications and hormonal contraceptives can ease the symptoms and slow the growth of endometrial tissue. If you have endometriosis and are trying to get pregnant, you can opt to have surgery that removes as much of the tissue growing outside of the uterus as possible. In extreme cases with severe endometriosis, a total hysterectomy may be the best treatment option, but is viewed as a last resort.
