Ulcers

Naturopathic Ulcer Treatment

Ulcers are painful open sores that can develop in the esophagus, the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. About 1 in 10 Americans will suffer from peptic or gastric ulcers at one point in their lives or another.

For many years medical professionals believed that ulcers were caused primarily by high levels of stress and a poor diet. Now they believe that ulcers are primarily caused by bacterial infections, overusing pain medications, smoking and drinking alcohol. Heavy smokers are more prone to developing ulcers in the small intestine, heavy drinkers are more susceptible to ulcers in the esophagus and people who take lots of painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen are more likely to have stomach ulcers. When there is an excess amount of stomach acid, it eats away the protective lining around the stomach that keeps it safe from stomach acid. When this protective layer of mucus is eroded, a sore can develop. The symptoms of ulcers include burning pain anywhere from the navel to the esophagus, pain that gets worse at night, nausea, vomiting and sudden appetite changes. If you eat antacids or a food that aids indigestion, you may notice the pain goes away for a while after ingesting them.
