Naturopathic Heartburn & Acid Reflux Treatment
Heartburn and acid reflux are very common conditions in the United States. About 20 percent of Americans report feeling heartburn at least once a week. Everyone experiences heartburn on occasion, but it is not normal or healthy to experience heartburn or acid reflux that negatively affects your quality of life more than two times per week. Constant, persisting heartburn can be a sign of a more serious ailment, and can cause significant complications.
Despite its name, heartburn does not affect the heart. It does, however, come with symptoms that are similar to those felt during a heart attack. Heartburn is actually irritation in the esophagus that is caused by stomach acid making its way up there. This results in a burning pain in the upper chest area which usually gets worse if you lie down or bend over. The typical cause of heartburn is a dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter. Normally, this sphincter tightens, preventing stomach acid from making its way back up the esophagus. If it doesn’t tighten all the way, stomach acid can seep through and eat away at the mucus lining the esophagus, causing heartburn. Foods that are high in fats and oils, such as a greasy pepperoni pizza, can also contribute to the occurrence of heartburn.
