Gallstones

Naturopathic Gallstone Treatment

The gall bladder is a tiny organ located under the liver that is responsible for sending bile to the small intestines to aid with digestion. Much like kidney stones, gall stones are small, hard deposits of material that form in the gall bladder. Also like kidney stones, gall stones can range in size from pebbles to golf balls. Some people can develop a single gall stone, while others can develop multiple stones at the same time.

Most of the time gall stones won’t cause any symptoms and will go unnoticed for years. However, when gall stones get stuck in the bile ducts symptoms do show up, and they can include upper abdominal pain or pain in the upper back, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, bloating and gas. The bile in the gall bladder is composed of cholesterol, bilirubin and bile salts. When there is an imbalance of these substances in the gall bladder, gall stones may form. The most common types of gall stones are cholesterol stones and pigment stones, which are formed with bilirubin. If your liver is sending more cholesterol to the gall bladder than the bile can break down, the extra cholesterol can form into crystals. Bilirubin is a natural chemical byproduct of the process of breaking down red blood cells. When too much bilirubin is present in the gall bladder, it can crystallize.
