Eczema

Naturopathic Eczema Treatment

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis as it is referred to in the world of medicine, is a chronic condition that causes an itchy inflammation of the skin. It is most commonly diagnosed in children before they reach the age of 5; however, adults can also develop the condition.

Eczema can be a very annoying condition to have, as it endures for prolonged periods of time and irritates the skin in many different areas of the body. The symptoms to look out for include red or brownish patches of skin, severe itching – especially at night, small raised bumps on the skin, and dry or flaky skin that is rubbed raw from scratching. Typically, eczema shows up on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, face, neck and behind the knees. In rare instances, eczema can even appear around the eyes and on the eyelids which, needless to say, can be very uncomfortable. If scratched for too long, the skin can break and make it much easier for harmful bacteria to enter the body, such as staphylococcus. No one really knows for sure what causes eczema, but it is thought to be caused by genetics (some people just have ultra-sensitive skin) and an overactive immune system.
